But the manner of it — Elam Ending activated, 130 total possessions, a four-point margin — tells you that Hawthorne pushed them. Blaze Caldwell put up 26 and Ember Kine added 21 for a Hammers squad that has now lost three straight by a combined margin of what should feel like nothing, and yet they are 0-and-3 with no cushion and no room for comfort. River Stone answered for Burnside with 34 points, a number that explains the outcome more cleanly than anything else in the box score. When one player in a 3-on-3 game is responsible for more than half his team's output and still wins, you're watching something close to a force of nature. Over in the other game, the Herons did something the Thorns couldn't do to them three rounds ago — they came into Rose City and won. St. Johns took a 55–52 decision, again with the Elam Ending triggered, again decided at the very edge. Briar Ashwood's 25 points kept the Thorns in it until the final target score, but it wasn't enough. The Herons are now 2-and-1 and sitting comfortably in second place, which is meaningful: with four playoff spots in an eight-team league, you'd expect the field to be crowded. Instead, the bottom of the standings is already developing a look of quiet desperation. What this round confirms is that both games went to the Elam Ending, both were decided by fewer than five points, and the average margin across the night was three. This is a league playing extremely close basketball — and yet one team is unbeaten and another is winless, which means small edges, compounded over time, are starting to sort the field in ways that won't be easy to reverse. The governance window is open this round, which means the rules themselves could shift before Round 4. Given how fine the margins are, even a minor structural change could scramble everything that's been established so far. Burnside has won this league before — twice, in fact. The question worth sitting with is whether anyone is building the capacity to stop them, or whether the rest of the season is quietly becoming a referendum on whether River Stone can be slowed down.
